War is deadly business - for the combatants, for the innocents who stand in its way and for the journalists who cover the battles, trying to keep the outside world informed. That danger was underscored this past week, as four international journalists were ambushed by gunmen and killed in Afghanistan.
It has been said that the first casualty of war is truth. Truth's only protectors in war are journalists. Without them guarding the free flow of information, providing an independent perspective, wars would be conducted in virtual secrecy. The only source of news would be the warring sides, who frequently lie to suit their own purposes.
