Nov. 26--A downtown Tacoma diamond merchant offers a sparkle of hope in a season of gloomy holiday sales predictions.
Despite the slow economy, residual stress from the September terrorist attacks and the 30,000 layoffs looming at Boeing, sales are up 36 percent this year at the Kantor Diamond Co., a discount jewelry retailer.
"We're expecting big increases this holiday season," company president David Kantor said last week. "A diamond is something permanent, and people always want to celebrate a birthday, engagement, wedding or anniversary."
