PORTSMOUTH -- They heard the laughter and squeals. But they couldn't see each other. The hedge was too dense, too overgrown.

One day, a ball somehow bounced through the barrier, into Michelle Burks' back yard. Before Michelle or her brothers and sisters could grab it, a little girl darted into view.

``She just popped out of the bushes and there she was, looking at us while we were staring at her. I still remember her beautiful white coat and curly brown hair,'' Michelle said.

``And I remember my grandmother calling out after me, `Stay back. You have nothing to do with that.' ''
