Events during the last decade of the Twentieth Century served to redefine the word 'crisis' for the European food industry. Crises such as BSE, Dioxins, and controversy about genetically modified foods, have led European consumers to believe that the foods they eat could damage their health.
In an effort to restore consumer and worldwide confidence in the European food industry, the EC published a White Paper on Food Safety and has introduced new legislation in several areas.
