Minnesota ranks as one of the most inventive places in the country, and its residents kept the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office very busy in the 1990s, according to a study released Tuesday.
A review of patent filings found that inventors in Rochester, Minn., reported 873.7 patents for every 100,000 residents from 1990 to 1999, the third-highest ratio in the nation. Minneapolis-St. Paul ranked 10th among the nation's 276 metro areas, with a ratio of 552.3 patents for every 100,000 residents.
