If you're looking for a romantic place to get away this winter, consider Connecticut's Quiet Corner, the name adopted for marketing purposes by 21 towns in Northeastern Connecticut.
These are pretty sleepy places - Willimantic is the "big city" in the region that includes such towns as Putnam, Lebanon and Coventry - all only about 1 1/2 to 2 hours from Boston. Sitting by a warm fire on a cold winter's day is de rigueur, and you might have to stop to let Farmer Joe's cow cross the road. A cautionary tale about the latter: I started my journalism career in the area, and a story I once covered was Farmer Joe's cow getting hit by a car.
