_A FIERY curtain of lava boils and bursts across the face of one of Jupiter's moons in this dramatically detailed picture.
It is erupting high into the night skies above the turbulent and pitted surface of Io, the most volcanic body in our solar system.
Close-up shots of breathtaking clarity were taken by the Galileo space probe on its five-year, halfbillion-mile journey to swing past Jupiter and its moons.
Visible at around the one o'clock position in the right-hand picture is a red ring of sulphur hundreds of miles across which has been deposited by a highly active volcano called Tvashtar.
