This is a valuable collection of essays. Until recently, historicist criticism of early modern writing has largely been concerned with power, gender, and subjectivity. What was lacking was a sense of where religion entered the equation, which was clearly the defining issue of a Europe-wide Cold War. The omission is partly a measure of how far religion has fallen behind politics, sexuality, and psychology on the agenda of modern intellectual enquiry. ...
