Dec. 1--California closed its borders to Clementine tangerines from Spain and ordered their confiscation from retail outlets following the discovery of live Mediterranean fruit fly larvae in the imported citrus in other parts of the country.
The Mediterranean fruit fly is considered one of the biggest threats to California agriculture, with the potential to do extensive damage to some of the Inland Empire's major crops, including oranges.
