CONFRONTED WITH a title like Something Special, a cover engraving of two embracing lovers, and a beautiful gift-book format, the unwary bookstore browser might be tempted to buy this book as a present for an anniversary or another romantic occasion, but the story, originally published by Iris Murdoch in 1957, would definitely not encourage romance.
