Dec. 2--Microsoft has a reputation for blowing version 1.0 of whatever it does, then relentlessly improving its products and finally getting it right with version 3.0.
Yet, the company usually associated with software may have broken that pattern with the $399 Xbox, its initial foray into the fiercely competitive market for console video games.
In terms of graphics, audio and general ease of use, the Xbox stands toe to toe with its primary next-generation console competitors -- Sony's Playstation 2 and Nintendo's GameCube.
