Like last summer's "American Outlaws," "Texas Rangers" is another western based on a true story that treats its Wild West setting like a theme park or a tumbleweeds episode of "TRL."

This movie's piece of history is the re-formation of the Texas Rangers in the 1870s to fight off bandits who dominated south Texas after the state troopers disbanded to fight in the Civil War.

But this tale unfurls in cartoonish fashion, with sickly,Bible-thumping Rangers veteran Dylan McDermott assembling a ragtag group of young recruits played by an ensemble including TV ...
