You'd like my friend Lawrence. He's intelligent, well-informed, thoughtful and courageous.
I get to hear him each morning on NPR reporting from Afghanistan, and I always envision a young man wearing a cream-colored sweater and holding a beer, though he actually inhabits a different world now than the one in which we met.
The events of the past few months make it difficult to live entirely in one world. One moment I'm driving along thinking about Christmas shopping, and the next I'm contemplating life in Afghanistan.
Even if I didn't know anyone there, the war would intrude into my life, but having a friend there makes it more real.
