The Red Sox should know no later than Friday at midnight whether right-hander Hideo Nomo will return next season.
The free agent starter and the Red Sox have been negotiating at a snail's pace since the season ended, but the ballclub faces the witching-hour deadline to offer arbitration to Nomo or else lose all negotiating rights until next May.
By then, the 2001 AL strikeout leader will have long since found a new home. Before then, he and the Red Sox are expected to intensify negotiations on a long-term deal that would suit both parties.
"I don't know if we would take arbitration even if they offered," said Nomo's agent, Don Nomura, yesterday. ...
