This short but well organised and well written work provides a lucid account of the main forces during a tragic period in French history, 1940-1945. The author, an historian at the University of Hudders-field rejects much of the Resistance "'myth' devised and peddled by de Gaulle." He explains the actions of the senile Petain, but is far more critical of Laval (an interesting contrary view is given by Jacques Barzun's recently published From Dawn ...
