Fundamental to our form of government is the system of checks and balances conceived by our forefathers and carefully preserved in the years since this country was founded. Wisely, the framers of our Constitution feared the concentration of political power in the hands of one individual or group, and established the three branches of government - the legislative, the executive, and the judicial branches - as co-equal bodies given specific assignments to temper the authority of the other branches.
