Lawmaker Mary Flowers used to hate the idea of cell phones in schools. About ten years ago, she worked hard to get the devices banned from Illinois schools.

At the time, Flowers argued that the phones cost too much money. She said students who could afford cell phones probably used them to deal drugs.

Today, Flowers has changed her mind. Now she wants the cell phone ban lifted. Why? "These are different times," she said.

Drugs are not the issue as much as school safety. "I'm thankful ... we have never had a Columbine [in Illinois]," Flowers said.
