* German theologian Gerhard Ebeling, who was a member of the Confessing Church during the Nazi period, died at age 89 on September 30 in Zurich, Switzerland. The Berlin-born Ebeling was best known as a founder of the "New Hermeneutics," for his research on Martin Luther and for his writings in historical and systematic theology.
