Maghreb-Machrek, the world's oldest, French-language magazine on the Arab world, has published its last issue. Publisher, La Documentation Francaise, France's governmental publishing house for magazines, has said that with its print run of 2000 for its tri-monthly issues, and only 1000 regular subscribers, the 37-year old publication is no longer economically feasible.
Interestingly, a petition launched in mid-October by two employees of the magazine, Jean Leca and Philippe Fargues, had, by the end of the month, been signed by well over 1000 of the world's leading Arab and Middle Eastern scholars, more than half from outside France, including 43 per cent based in ...
