The European Court of Justice has ruled that UK failed to comply with =Directive 76/160/EEC concerning the quality of bathing water in a =judgement delivered November 13. The ruling supports the Commission =which lodged an infringement procedure against the UK before the Court =in 1999 for failing to honour the Directive. Based on reports on the =1996 and 1997 seasons provided by the UK authorities on the =implementation of this Directive, the Commission noted that in 1997 only =88.3% of the United Kingdom bathing waters complied with mandatory =limited values specified in column I of the Annex I to the Directive. =This figure was at 89.4% during the previous bathing ...
