Aside from DOT regulations dealing with interstate pipelines, there is no uniform requirement for testing of pipelines. Therefore, it is recommended that local authorities be queried as to any odes that apply to underground piping in their jurisdiction.
Piping is usually divided between below- and above-grade categories. Underground piping should have cathodic protection whether or not it is coated steel. The cathodic protection should be checked at least quarterly and anodes replaced as needed. Testing and inspection of below-grade pipe is a challenge.
