In the series of 16 large color photographs featured in this recent exhibition, "The Interpretation of Dreams," Andres Serrano was inspired in part by Sigmund Freud's book of the same name. Marking the centenary of the publication of this seminal work of psychoanalytical literature, Serrano does not attempt to illustrate the book's case studies and only peripherally touches upon Freudian concepts. Instead, he explores his own dreams and fantasies in these often-unsettling images. Many feature elaborately costumed models posing in carefully orchestrated, dramatically lit tableaux.
