THERE IS A bulletin board hanging on one wall of the Madison Dinner House in Virginia City, Mont. One weekend last summer, families from miles around were trailering their horses into the former gold mining boomtown for a four-hour "poker ride" through the adjoining country.
It was that weekend that a new note was scrawled onto the bulletin board:
"YOU HAVE BETTER HOT CHOCLATE (sic) THAN TOMMY'S, BUT TOMMY'S HAS BETTER WIPT CREAM. P.S. I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE. THANK YOU."
We can only surmise that a restaurant critic was born that day.
