Leadville, Colo. - Ski season brings a lot of visitors to southern Colorado. The tourists put an extra burden on wastewater management during the winter. But Climax Molybdenum Co. is putting the sludge from those peak months to use by reclaiming acres of land at its Colorado mining site.
Climax, a unit of Phoenix-based Phelps Dodge Corp., is successfully using sewage waste to help rehabilitate a large tailing impoundment at its molybdenum open pit and underground mine.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently recognized the company's program as part of the agency's 2001 National Biosolids Exemplary Management Awards Program.
