A sluggish economy and increasing raw material, energy and labor costs pushed major players in the Mexican tire industry to withdraw or downscale production in the country in 2001.
Groupe Michelin and Goodyear shuttered their Mexican facilities, blaming the slump on the economy and rising labor and raw materials costs. Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. and Continental A.G. continued to wrestle with these factors, aiming to trim costs to defeat the downturn.
Goodyear closed its Compania Hulera Goodyear-Oxo S.A. de C.V. Tultitlan facility in April, while Michelin axed its Uniroyal S.A. de C.V. subsidiary plants in Tacuba and Queretaro in August 2000, with the ...
