Dec. 11: Auburn - Beginning Jan. 1, the Social Security earnings base - the maximum amount of annual earnings on which employees, employers and self-employed people must pay Social Security tax - will increase from $15,300 to $16,500.
This means that people who earn $16,500 or more a year will pay $965.25 in Social Security taxes, or $70.20 more than the $895.05 they paid in 1976.
Dec. 13: Moravia - Charles Evans Hughes, lawyer, governor, presidential candidate, U.S. Secretary of State, justice of the Supreme Court, was born in Glens Falls in April, 1862.
