Dec. 14--KABUL, Afghanistan -- The man chosen to lead Afghanistan out of war and toward a lasting peace spent his first day in its capitol city, meeting on Thursday with key northern alliance officials as he prepared to assume office in less than two weeks.
Hamid Karzai landed late Wednesday at Baghram airbase, where he was greeted by several government ministers. Among them was Yunis Qanoni, the newly appointed interior minister and a part of the so-called new generation of northern alliance leaders who will play key roles in the new government.
