RAMALLAH, West Bank _ The Bush administration recalled its special envoy to the Middle East on Saturday as continued fighting between Israelis and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip left five Palestinians dead and dashed hopes for Anthony Zinni's peace mission.
With the peace process at its lowest point since it began eight years ago, United States State Department spokesman Richard Boucher announced that Zinni will return to Washington for consultations with President Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell.
He said that the end of Zinni's unsuccessful three-week mission does not mean the Bush administration is scaling down its efforts in the region.
