California Earthquake Rocks Insurers
Insurers are shifting their focus from the devastation of Hurricane Hugo to the death and destruction in Northern California as they marshal their forces to help policy-holders recover from a major earthquake which crippled the region last week.
The Oct. 17 quake caused at least 270 deaths, making it the second deadliest in United States history, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, Va.
At 6.9 on the Richter scale, the quake was the eighth strongest ever in the United States, and the strongest in the region since April 18, 1906, when an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 8.3 hit San ...
