The Eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) is a small, brownish, ground-dwelling squirrel. It is usually five to six inches long. Chipmunks are easy to distinguish. They have short, pointy heads marked with two white stripes, one above and one below the eye. They also have five black lines with white striping down the back. They sit upright and hold food with their front feet.
The scientific name, Tamias, is Latin and means "steward," or "one who is responsible for taking care of things." The Native Americans gave them the name "chipmunk" meaning "head first," because of the way they climb down trees head first. They also make the sound, "chip-chip-chip," giving ...
