HE overthrew the Danish kingdom of York, he was the first leader to hold sway over all of the English and he was proclaimed as 'rex totius Britanniae,' king of all Britain.
His name was Athelstan. He reigned over England from 924 until 939 and he spoke the Anglo-Saxon dialect of the West Mercians, the dialect from which is drawn crucial elements in the accent and speech of working-class Brummagem.
Athelstan's achievements were wide-ranging and impressive. He was both a cunning warleader and a noted law-giver.
