Since Independence a trickle of Mau Mau memoirs has appeared in press. Clough has selected thirteen for analysis as personal recollection, as history and as contributions to public debate and memory. They include those of leaders like J. M. Kariuki, the first to be published, in 1963, `General China' and Bildad Kaggia, and those of more obscure forest fighters.
