DUNDEE United chairman Doug Smith last night claimed Jim McLean tried to have manager Alex Smith sacked three times in the last year.
The Tannadice chief's astonishing claim came just days after McLean insisted the boss's job would be safe if his four-man consortium were to take over the club.
But the United legend hit back, saying the board should be "ashamed" for involving the manager in the row.
