For years, the Food Bank of Oakland County's greatest challenge in feeding the hungry was competing with Gleaners Community Food Bank for support and donations in Oakland County.
The competition between the Pontiac-based Food Bank and the Detroit-based Gleaners had been heated for several years, said Helen Kozlowski-Hicks, Food Bank executive director since 1997. Gleaners wanted to seek support in Oakland County, and the Food Bank wanted Gleaners to stay off its turf, she said.
Then one day, ``We all sort of got the light bulb at the same time,'' she said. ``We have to feed hungry people, and we're arguing about what?''
