Mary Murphy and her five companions set a fiery pace, loping up and flying down hills, talking and laughing as they ski. Cutting cleanly through a dense forest of second-growth spruce and fir, the trail ahead is wide as a backcountry road and traverses the mod pitched northwestern slopes of Silver Star Mountain. I throw my arms and legs in a vigorous Nordic stride to keep up.
