John Burt's new selection of Robert Penn Warren's verse reminds us that Warren is a major American poet. Readers may need this sort of reminder. It's been scarcely fifteen years since his death, but Warren has fallen off the poetry radar screen: he's omitted from or under-represented in anthologies, and gets unjustly lumped with the Fugitive group, whose aesthetics and politics he abandoned fairly early in his career.
