Dec. 19--In the broadband world, victory doesn't guarantee survival.
Even as it was winning a high-profile race against the nation's biggest phone companies to sell Americans high-speed Internet connections, At Home Corp. was losing the fight to stay solvent.
Strengthened by an early start, At Home had 4 million cable modem customers, 1 million more than the nation's four largest phone companies' digital subscriber line service.
But a badly conceived, fractious partnership with its cable-company owners and a host of expensive and unsuccessful acquisitions ...
