Notre Dame was willing to put up with George O'Leary being a crude and brutal football coach. But lying . . .
O'Leary once made an offensive lineman who had missed a block in practice stand still while four rushing linemen buried him. This required a full 15 minutes of medical attention for the player, or roughly the length of time O'Leary was football coach at Notre Dame.
At Georgia Tech, a school of no small academic reputation, O'Leary graduated only a third of his players, while the man he replaced at Notre Dame, Bob Davies, graduated all of his. Notre Dame could live with the math, but lying . . ...
