A recently completed patient study has found vitamins that cost only pennies can prevent repeat blockage of coronary arteries after angioplasty surgery.
Coronary angioplasty is a procedure in which clogged arteries are expanded using a balloon-like device inserted through a catheter that has been threaded through the artery, UCSD said.
According to the American Heart Association, a total of 926,000 angioplasties were performed in 1998 in the United States alone.
The problem, however, is that up to 40 percent of patients undergoing angioplasty develop new blockage requiring repeat angioplasty or bypass surgery.
