The World Trade Centre (WTC) Montreal was setup in 1984 by the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal (BTMM) in an effort to provide export services to its members. The BTMM paved the way for a WTC in Montreal by acquiring a franchise from the parent non-profit organization. The two entities operated in tandem for a while, although they are now run independently. WTC Montreal's director general, Liette Lamonde, hastens to point out that the BTMM still plays a crucial role within the organization. The international network of World Trade Centres includes 500,000 members in over 100 countries and is active in 320 major cities around the world.
