PANAMA Canal Railway will launch passenger services this month on a 55-km link which connects the Atlantic port of Manzanillo to the Pacific port of Balboa. Railfreight operations on the important strategic route, which includes a 40km section running parallel with the Panama Canal, will start in July.
Rehabiliation of the existing 47km 1524mm-gauge line, plus the construction of an 8km extension to Manzanillo in Colon and two new intermodal terminals at each port, has been completed at a cost of $US 80 million.
