There are times when long-distance travel suddenly brings unexpected rewards. It took a grueling twenty-four hours to travel from Dublin to Luderitz on the coast of southern Namibia, via London, Frankfurt, and Windhoek. Our destination: the Nest Hotel, an apposite description of a building snugly fitting into a rocky, windswept headland. Why did I suddenly feel at home? Coming from Ireland, it occurred to me that it could easily have been a lonely corner of the Aran Islands in the western Atlantic. The tangy sea air and mournful howling of the wind added to its strange familiarity, but the African sun was scorching.
