Smokestacks, storage tanks and other landmarks loom in the distance as a helmsman navigates the entrance channel to the Port of Palm Beach.
In reality the ship doesn't exist. And the port, though it is laid out like the real thing in Florida, exists only in a laptop computer.
The helmsman is viewing a computer model developed by San Diego-based Science Applications International Corp. Using satellite imagery and still photography, SAIC says it is capable of duplicating any port in the world.
With measurements of channel depth, the company can also duplicate what's under the water, charting safe or shallow territory.
