``Gift of God,'' by Marty Haugen (GIA, 53 minutes).
Once again, Marty Haugen of Minnesota shows why he's one of today's best contemporary liturgical composers. The first two hymns explore Advent themes of expectation and hope. "Maranatha," set to the tune of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," has a dramatic drum opening. Soloist Mary Preus then leads a rich chorus while guitars and mandolins fill the background. The title track, "Gift of God," is a song about the Christ child. "In the silence, you are here," Haugen sings. The most powerful track is the "Kyrie." Haugen has taken the traditional Greek chant, "Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison," and added ...
