WE may be on the brink of a Christmas cold snap, but there has been only one year out of the past 150 that was warmer than 2001.
And the 10 hottest years since modern records began in 1855 have all been since 1988 - with only 1998 warmer than this year, according to scientists at the Met Office. Global warming may be the cause.
