To hear city and county officials talk, one could get the impression that acreage for Empire Zones, which entitle businesses located in them to generous tax benefits, is a scarce commodity in Onondaga County.
On paper, it is.
But a lot more Empire Zone acreage can be freed for use by developers willing to invest money and create jobs anywhere in the county or city.
The city has 86 unallocated acres from the 1,280 it is allowed to designate as an Empire Zone, where businesses that invest and create jobs can operate for at least 10 years free of property and state income taxes. The county has 177 of ...
