The day starts gently. It is my favorite class. By a fluke of scheduling and funding I have a class of four students who have committed themselves to the Advanced Placement course in Spanish literature. We are reading a story by Jorge Borges, the Argentine master of the short story. Even in this tiny group I have a cross-section of abilities and interests. Two students, a girl and a boy, have been in my Spanish classes for several years. I know them thoroughly -- how they think, how they write, what will interest them, and how they will approach the assignment.
