2001 DEC 30 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Doctors at the Cleveland Clinic said the first Ohio infant to receive a heart transplant from a donor with a different blood type is doing fine and may be going home next week.
The milestone transplant operation was performed on Eric Leslie, 6-week-old son of Jennifer and Jamie Leslie of Columbus, on November 5, 2001.
Clinic surgeons took advantage of a phenomenon doctors only recently discovered: The still-developing immune systems of newborns don't yet produce enough of the antibodies that would cause an older recipient to reject an incompatible heart.
