Dec. 25--Tom Nieman heard the story countless times as a little boy.
His great-grandmother Mary Nieman left her home in Germany in 1860 to start a new life in America. About 22 years old at the time, she and her husband, Anthony, could take only two suitcases on the ship they took to Baltimore.
One of the suitcases they filled with clothing.
The other, they filled with seedlings and seeds for plants.
Those seeds, Nieman was told, were used to start the nursery that Mary Nieman operated in Cincinnati.
