The Province of Ontario represents about 1/10th of the Canadian landmass, an area equivalent to that of South Africa or the western European countries of France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands combined. Its population of 10 million accounts for about 33% of Canada's inhabitants. The majority of people live in southern Ontario along the northern shores of lakes Erie and Ontario and the St. Lawrence Seaway, with considerable concentration in the world class metropolitan area of Toronto.
